Geoff Vallance wins 8th Fish O Mania Qualifier by 20lb

DELCAC angler Geoff Vallance, a builder from Crawley, became the 8th angler to qualify for the Fish O Mania final at Cudmore.  Geoff drew peg 143 on Lake 4 where he fished shallow using 16metres of pole with 6ml pellets to land a haul of 172lbs 8ozs for a comfortable win over the other 129 competitors.

Dull damp conditions greeted anglers taking part in the 8th Qualifier of the 16 match series, which is managed by the Angling Trust.  Weights were pretty good, given the conditions, with 7 over the magic ton and only one of the 13 x 10peg sections was won with less than 50lbs.

Runner up Danny Grimsey, a British Gas Heating Engineer from Hadleigh in Suffolk, fished peg 112 on Lake 3.  Danny, who fishes for Maver Image, alternated between long and short pole using luncheon meat as bait to take a net of carp and barbel for a very good weight of 152lbs 10ozs.

3rd placed Wayne Shepherd from March in Cambridgeshire fished B32 on Bridges Lake where he fed pellets in a cage feeder with sweetcorn on the hook for a net of carp and skimmers for 124lbs 6ozs. Wayne’s biggest fish was a carp weighing 12lbs 2ozs.

4th Tony Wynnick of Maver Image with 121 lbs 4ozs from peg 141 on Lake 4

5th  Dan Hull Ratby AC 116lbs 14ozs from peg 135 on lake 3

6th Perry Stone  105lbs 12ozs Peg 110 Lake 3

Stu Ballard Becomes 7th Finalist From Fish O Mania Qualifiers

Stu Ballard, past finalist in 2010, and a Construction Works Manager from Aldridge, West Midlands last weekend became the 7th qualifier for the 2012 Fish O Mania final.

A bitterly cold north easterly wind and cloud, accompanied by occasional glimpses of sunshine greeted the competitors for the 7th of the 2012 Fish O Mania qualifiers held at Maver Larford Lakes, who were all hoping that the weather forecasters had got it right for once and there wouldn’t be any rain, which thankfully turned out to be the case.

Drawn on Specimen Lake peg 13 an area where the bigger carp tend to show from and with the wind in his face, Stu decided to fish 2 lines, one short at approximately 5 metres, just on top of the shelf and the other at 12 metres. Alternating these 2 lines with the method feeder and pole, feeding little and often, no more than half a dozen pellets at a time, and alternating meat and corn on the hook, he weighed in 58.20Kg, all carp, with the biggest fish being 22lbs 8ozs, with another of 14lbs for good measure.

Unfortunately there were only 125 competitors fishing out of the 130. There were 17 no shows and only 12 reserves turned up to take the vacant places. The Angling Trust requests that anyone unable to fish in a qualifier should contact the Trust by phone in advance, so that their tickets can be re-allocated to people on the reserve list who want to fish the match. If their ticket can be used by a reserve angler, they will get a refund of their entry fee.

It was two of the reserves who were fortunate enough to get one of these no show tickets that took first and second places in this qualifier, both of whom fish for Maver Midland and know the venue well.

In second place and drawn on Match Lake peg 6, another past finalist in 2008, and team mate of the winner was Les Thompson a Carpenter from Kingswinford, West Midlands. Again with the wind in his face he also decided to fish 2 lines, one at approximately 7 metres down his peg at 2 metres out from the bank and the other at the same length 6 metres out. Again alternating these 2 lines and feeding 4mm pellet with pellet as hook bait, he caught a net of f1s steadily throughout the match to finish with a weight of 43.08Kg.

In third place was Peter Shryan, an Account Manager from St Helens, Merseyside, drawn on Arena peg 38, with a weight of 38.91Kg of mainly Carp and a few skimmers.

Fourth was Darren Cox, another regular Fish O Mania competitor and past finalist, U.K. Manager for Garbolino from Ettington and fishing for Starlets, drawn on Match Lake peg 17 with a weight of 38.40Kgs of Carp to 10lb and F1’s.

In fifth place and admitting that he’s fished more Fish O Mania qualifiers than he can count was Geoff Ringer, retired, from Ravensthorpe, Northampton.
Drawn on Specimen Lake peg 76 he finished the match with a weight of 36,330Kgs.

Local Angler Peter Marlow Wins Peatling Lakes Fish O Mania Qualifier

With the unsettled weather still affecting sport the outcome of the Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier at Peatling Lakes, Leicester on Wednesday 2nd May 2012 was always going to be uncertain. Many of the competitors fancied the larger lakes looking to catch big carp shallow, or in the margins. However, the sport was very patchy with anglers seeing fish out of reach in the centres of the lakes. In the end it was the smaller lakes which ultimately dominated proceedings.

Incredibly only 250 grams separated the top two anglers. Leicester angler, Peter Marlow who fished Peg 12 on lake C placed an excellent 43 kilos 750 grams on the scales. His catch all the more remarkable as it comprised of silver fish with chub and barbel up to 2 kilos taken mainly on a small cage feeder to the island. His main baits were casters, meat and pellets. Agonisingly second was Barry Mason from March, Cambridgeshire. Barry drew Peg 24 on Plough Pool and took carp to 4 kilos plus F1’s for a total of 43 kilos 500 grams fishing corn over pellet at 16 metres.

Third spot went to another Leicestershire angler John Hall. Fishing Peg 5 on Magna pool John caught steadily through the day to record 38 kilos and 50 grams on the method feeder. He had some proper carp with his biggest going to 6 kilos. John used pellets with meat throughout. In fourth place, and opposite John was previous Fish ‘O’ Mania Champion Marc Jones on Peg 15. Marc weighed 29 kilos 250 grams with his best fish nudging 7 kilos. He caught mainly shallow on meat. Also on Magna was Hereford angler Dave Roberts who caught 28 kilos 600 grams on the pellet waggler.

The Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier action continues on Saturday 5th May at Maver Larford Lakes, Worcestershire.

Sensus U18 and Drennan U23 Coarse World Championship Teams Announced For 2012

Mark Downes and Steve Sanders, Angling Trust England Youth Managers are happy to announce the U18s and U23s World Championship teams who will be representing England in the World Championships in Radece, Slovenia on 28th and 29th July 2012.

Following a successful England trial for the U23s that was held on the Gloucester canal on Saturday 14th April 2012 Mark Downes, Drennan team England Manager, was looking for all round skills, and the ability to feed and fish two lines on the pole in the five hour session. The anglers did not disappoint with some great talent on the day.

The Drennan U23s England team for 2012 will be an unchanged squad from last year’s World Angling Games held in Italy.

They are:

  • Matt Godfrey
  • Matt Derry
  • Frankie Gianocelli
  • Cameron Hughes
  • James Dent.

Mark Downes, Drennan U23s team England Manager added “This is a good team, full of experience and I feel we will do well on this particular venue”.

Steve Sanders, Sensas U18s team England Manager held the U18s England trial on Saturday 28th April 2012 at Gold Valley Lakes, Aldershot to select his squad for Slovenia.

 The team will consist of:

  • Jake Dye
  • Luke Wrzosek
  • Matt Barnett
  • Sam Hughes
  • Matt Oliver

The World Championship venue on the River Sava, Radece Slovenia is a good venue and one where Drennan Team England took the bronze medal in the European Championships three years ago. This prolific venue is a deep and at times powerful river, and the target species will be Nase, a dace like fish with a bulbous nose, vimber, roach and barbel and it will be a predominantly 13m pole event, but the bolo and slider may come into play.

Invasive non-native species can have a damaging impact on British plants, animals and ecosystems. They can spread disease, prey on native species and compete with them for food and living space.

Plants that grow quickly can block waterways, while some animals can destroy riverbanks. What’s more, dealing with the problem of non-native species can be very expensive.

AT-1004

If you are a water user, you may unknowingly be helping to spread invasive species from one water body to another in equipment, shoes and clothing.

Help stop this from happening by following three simple steps: check, clean and dry equipment before leaving the water.

National Fishing Month Off To A Flying Start

National Fishing Month 2012 (NFM) takes place between 20th July and the 27th August, and with over 100 events already listed online at the new website www.nationalfishingmonth.com, organisers are hoping that this year will be bigger and better than ever.

AT-1005 AT-1006

Coverage and awareness of National Fishing Month will be stepped up this year as national destination retailer, Go Outdoors, has agreed to sponsor the initiative by organising store events across the country, promoting local outdoor events and giving away hundreds of gift vouchers as prizes.

Peter Aske, buyer from Go Outdoors said: ‘We are absolutely delighted to be associated with National Fishing Month 2012.  The initiative does a great job in highlighting the sport of angling, and Go Outdoors will be making sure that we spread the word and help promote fishing to a wider audience wherever we can.’

National Fishing Month will be launched this year with coarse and game coaching sessions at the CLA Game Fair at Belvoir Castle. Coaches from the Professional Anglers Association (PAA), the Angling Trust and Community Angling Regeneration Project (CARP) will be on hand to encourage and advise Game Fair visitors to have a go at fishing.

Decathlete medallist Dean Macey is as enthusiastic as ever with his support and endorsement for NFM despite his busy schedule as an Olympics compere.   Dean commented: “Throughout my athletics career, fishing helped me mentally unwind and I’m sure without it, I would have burnt myself out. That’s why I support National Fishing Month and urge everyone to get involved and take part.”

Naidre Werner, Angling Trades Association Chair and NFM Project Manager, added: “In 2011, NFM promoted over 300 events on the website and coached 15,000 people throughout the period.  This will be a tough act to beat but with the support of Go Outdoors, Dean Macey, the coaches and the committed organisers, the NFM team are looking forward to a great 2012.”

It’s not too late to organise an event for National Fishing Month 2012.

Just visit www.nationalfishingmonth.com and register your event online.

The Angling Trust has called on politicians to recognise that England needs a completely fresh approach to water supply and storage in order to end the chronic wastage of water in times of flood and the environmentally damaging over abstraction of vulnerable rivers in times of drought.

The Trust has highlighted the situation in the Thames Region where despite a 7% increase in population in London and the South-East since 2001 no new reservoirs have been built for more than 40 years. At the same time demand for water has reached a record level of 1000 litres per person per week, putting huge strain on the network at the expense of the environment.

National Campaigns Coordinator Martin Salter said:

“As any angler knows, billions of gallons of floodwater rush out to sea at times of high rainfall yet a few weeks later water companies may be applying for drought orders to suck dry our already depleted chalkstreams and other vulnerable rivers. It is utter madness that governments of both persuasions have failed to plan for the needs of expanding populations and the challenges of climate change which mean more extreme weather conditions including both drought and floods. In the Thames Region in particular it beggars belief that no new reservoir has been given planning permission for the last 40 years and that proposals for a much needed Abingdon Reservoir were rejected in 2010. It is just plain commonsense to store in times of plenty to get through periods of scarcity.”

The Trust has made its call at a time when most of England is officially in drought, groundwater levels are at historic lows following two years of exceptionally low rainfall and yet there are 150 Environment Agency flood alerts and 32 flood warnings in place as the UK experiences one of the wettest Aprils since records began.

Water minister Richard Benyon acknowledged that the current deluge will do little to end the drought when he said: “ I’m afraid we need more rain as what we’ve had isn’t filling up the ground reserves that we need in order to cope with the drought.”

Angling Trust Chief Executive Mark Lloyd added:

“Politicians must realise that water is a precious resource which must use more carefully and stored more wisely. There is an urgent need to invest in greater storage to avoid the widespread depletion of groundwater levels and river flows. Much more should be done to reduce the demand for water – including the introduction of universal metering – and more of the supply should come from reservoirs rather than via unsustainable abstractions.”

Low flows in rivers are highly damaging to a host of aquatic wildlife, to fish stocks and to fishing, which is an important pastime for millions of people in the UK and generates £3.5 billion for the economy. Low water levels do great damage to fish populations and can destroy spawning habitat.

Key areas where the Angling Trust believes action should be taken include:

• Building new storage reservoirs to capture winter rainfall;

• Fixing water supply leaks (although this becomes less and less cost-effective as some leaks are very expensive to fix);

• Requiring all new developments to be water neutral – i.e. very water efficient and the developer to be required to retrofit water efficiency measures in homes and industry in the same water catchment equal to the amount of new water used;

• Removal of drainage to allow water to soak into the ground;

• Major public awareness campaigns to reduce water usage from 160 litres per person per day;

• Universal metering to ensure that those who waste water pay for it directly;

Lakeview Fishery, has a history of providing a very tight match at the top, irrespective of the conditions, not producing massive weights but, providing a match where it is difficult to predict where it will be won from.

With only 3 lbs separating the top three positions, it was Simon Medd from Stockton on Tees, a Chemical Engineer fishing for Cleveland Angling Centre who took the winning spot.  Simon drew Canal peg 6 and started down the edge on pellet to catch 20 lbs of carp in the first 30 minutes.  He then switched to the far bank  using the same tactics and feeding little and often and, using only half a pint of loose fed pellets through the whole match, gradually built up his weight of 65 lbs 8 ozs made up of carp to 5 lbs to run out the eventual winner and the fifth qualifier for the 2012 Fish ‘O’ Mania grand final on 14th July 2012.

Only 2 lbs behind him was Sean Huggins, a regular Fish ‘O’ Mania competitor and past finalist, drawn on Serpent peg 1, weighing in with 63 lbs 8 ozs.  Sean openly admitted that he thought he was being battered on both sides and never thought he had a chance of being this close to the winner.  He again fished short and across, picking up two or three fish from each line, but lost three fish during the match which turned out to cost him the winners spot.

Third place and 3 lbs behind the winner, also losing a number of fish, was Ben Roberts from Flintshire, drawn on Serpent peg 24, fishing for Drennan North West and weighing in with a weight of 62 lbs 8 ozs.  In fourth place was Stephen Barraclough of Doncaster, drawn on Serpent peg 8 and fishing for Ultimate Barnsley Blacks, with a weight of 59 lbs 7 ozs, and fifth place went to Gary Miller of Cuffley, Hertfordshire, drawn on Stream peg 20 with a weight of 55 lb 8ozs.

The next Fish ‘O’ Mania qualifier heads to Peatling Pools at Leicestershire on Wednesday 2nd May 2012.
